Soil Samples (Soil Texture)

Grades 3–8 (Kit)

Get your hands dirty learning about soil! This complete soil texture kit allows students to explore the three primary soil types—sand, silt loam, and clay—through hands-on investigation. By feeling, observing, and comparing samples, students gain a deeper understanding of particle size, texture, and how soil characteristics affect water retention and plant growth.

This kit is ideal for introducing soil science concepts, supporting inquiry-based investigations, and connecting classroom learning to agriculture and environmental science.

Kit Contents

  • 2 cups of sand
  • 2 cups of silt loam
  • 2 cups of clay

Please note: these soil samples are not lab tested—they’re intended for classroom soil texturing activities and hands-on learning.

Lesson Plans

Use this kit with Activity 2: Soil Textures by Feel in the Types by Texture lesson plan, available on the National Agricultural Literacy Curriculum Matrix. Additional soil and agriculture lessons can be found on the Matrix to create a full unit on soil science.

Ordering Options

Need just one type of soil? Order individual samples of Sand, Silt Loam, or Clay for classroom investigations or refills.

Extend the Learning

Challenge students to test water infiltration rates, explore soil composition with a soil texture triangle, or collect local samples to compare with those in the kit.

Needed this for a FFA project and there was the perfect amount of soil to use for the experiment. The package arrived in a timely manner as well.

I was given a short time to put together a brief presentation for 30 to 60 people on herb garden site selection, soil, and remedies. The staff was quite helpful making sure the samples arrived on time and they added a lot to my presentation.
