Grades 3–5 (Kit)
Watch wheat and soybeans sprout right before your eyes! This kit gives students the chance to plant wheat and soybean seeds in mini ziplock bags, attach them to yarn, and wear them as “living necklaces.” Within a few days, sprouts will appear, allowing students to observe germination, root growth, and the early stages of plant development up close.
Perfect for lessons on plant growth, seed anatomy, and the importance of crops in agriculture, this hands-on activity helps students make real-world connections to the food system while building observation and data-recording skills.
Kit Contents
- Mini ziplock bags
- Wheat seeds
- Soybean seeds
- Cotton balls
- Yarn (for creating the necklaces)
- Instructions for assembly and observation
Includes enough supplies for 30 students.
Lesson Plans
Pair this kit with lessons on germination, seed structure, and plant growth from the Seeds, Miraculous Seeds lesson plan and other related resources on the National Agricultural Literacy Curriculum Matrix.
Extend the Learning
Encourage students to compare germination rates between wheat and soybeans, measure root and shoot lengths daily, and record data in science journals. For other seed options, check out the Living Necklace – Corn Kit and Living Necklace – Bean Kit.
