Grades 3–5 (Kit)
Wear your science experiment! This hands-on kit lets students grow two bean seeds and two bean embryos in mini ziplock bags that they can wear as “living necklaces.” Within a few days, sprouts will begin to grow—giving students a front-row seat to observe plant germination and development up close.
This activity is an excellent way to teach plant growth requirements, parts of a plant, and the life cycle of beans. It’s perfect for classrooms, homeschool lessons, or STEM events where students can proudly display their growing experiment.
Kit Contents
- Mini ziplock bags
- Bean seeds
- Cotton balls
- Yarn (for creating the necklaces)
- Instructions for assembly and observation
Includes enough supplies for 15 students.
Lesson Plans
Use this kit with the featured lessons Seeds, Miraculous Seeds and Bean Seed Cycles on the National Agricultural Literacy Curriculum Matrix.
Extend the Learning
Have students compare seed germination rates in different environmental conditions (light vs. dark, warm vs. cool) or track root and shoot growth by measuring daily changes. For another version of this activity, check out the Living Necklace – Corn Kit or Living Necklace - Wheat and Soybean Kit.
