GM Soybean Seed

Grades 9–12 (Kit)

Provide a hands-on experience for students to compare conventional soybean seeds to genetically modified Roundup Ready® soybean seeds. This kit includes conventional soybean seeds, GM soybean seeds, and the testing materials to indicate which seed contains the protein responsible for making Roundup Ready® soybeans tolerant to the herbicide glyphosate.

⚠️ Heat-Sensitive Item: Some components in this kit are sensitive to heat. To keep them in the best condition, we recommend storing the kit in a refrigerator. During the summer months, we ship early in the week with expedited shipping to help ensure it arrives safely.

Kit Contents

Each kit includes enough materials for one seed test experiment:

  • 3 conventional soybeans
  • 3 genetically modified "Roundup Ready"® soybeans
  • 2 QuickStix test strips
  • 4 weighing boats
  • 2 transfer pipettes
  • 2 reaction vials
  • 2 zip closure bags

Planning multiple experiments? Please order additional kits for individual or group work. For example, 5 groups will require 5 kits.

This kit is designed to accompany the lesson The Science of a GMO found on the National Agricultural Literacy Curriculum Matrix. Additional lesson plans associated with this kit can be found on the National Agricultural Literacy Curriculum Matrix.

Important Storage Information

  • If you are not using this kit immediately, store it in a refrigerator.
  • DO NOT freeze the kit contents.
  • Use the kit within 3 months for best results.

Important Notice

Due to genetic variations in the current stock of soybean varieties, growth rates may differ. This variation could unintentionally mislead students into thinking the difference is due to one being genetically modified (GM) and the other being conventional, when in fact, that is not the case. To ensure accurate learning outcomes, we are temporarily removing the GM Leaf Test kit from our inventory.

Extend the Learning

To explore molecular biology and genetics further, consider conducting hands-on experiments using PCR tools. PCR techniques are widely used in agriculture, medicine, and criminal justice. miniPCR offers affordable equipment, software, and classroom-tested curriculum for deeper investigations into DNA. Other PCR machine options are available online.
