Grades 3–5 (Kit)
Paint with the colors of the earth! This kit introduces students to the science of soils by using finely ground soil samples as natural pigments. Learners explore how soils vary in color, texture, and classification while creating unique soil-based art.
Each soil sample is labeled with its color classification by hue, value, and chroma. Through hands-on painting activities, students gain a deeper understanding of soil science, agriculture, and the natural resources beneath their feet.
Kit Contents
- Five finely ground and sifted soil samples
- Color classification (hue, value, and chroma) for each soil
Additional Supplies
The following common classroom materials are needed to complete the activity and are not included in the kit:
- Paint brushes
- Construction paper (light grey, light tan, off white)
- School glue
- Jars or small containers
- Toilet paper (for texturing)
Lesson Plans
Use this kit with the featured lesson: Color in the Garden, which uses soil pigments in painting to help students understand soil properties.

Extend the Learning
Encourage students to compare soil colors from their own region, connect soil properties to plant growth, or explore how natural pigments have been used in art and culture throughout history. For regional comparisons, explore local soil data using the NRCS Web Soil Survey.
