Grades 3–12 (Kit)
Explore renewable vs. nonrenewable resources in a hands-on way! This simple yet powerful demonstration shows students the difference between petroleum-based Styrofoam packing peanuts and corn-based biodegradable packing peanuts. Students observe how one dissolves in water while the other remains intact—sparking discussions about sustainability, biodegradability, and product design.
This quick activity is perfect for science lessons on natural resources, environmental impact, or consumer choices. It’s easy to set up and memorable for students of all ages.

Lesson Plans
Use this kit with lessons on renewable and nonrenewable resources available on the National Agricultural Literacy Curriculum Matrix.
Extend the Learning
Encourage students to collect packing materials from home and test them to determine if they are biodegradable. Teach them how to identify petroleum-based peanuts (shiny surface) versus biodegradable peanuts (dull, cheese-puff-like appearance). Discuss the impact of packaging choices on landfills and the environment.
