An updated Apple Land Use Model is available.

Imagine the Earth as an apple. Use this large, 16.5"x17.5" apple model to demonstrate the small amount of land used to grow food for human consumption. The model is two layers of durable styrene board with a handle on the back of the bottom layer. The top layer is cut into sections and held to the bottom layer by magnets. Remove the top layer of the apple to reveal the image underneath.

Use the following narrative with the Apple Land Use Model to demonstrate how the distribution of Earth's water and land resources affects food production.

Updated Narrative:

  1. Hold up the Apple Land Use Model. "This apple represents the planet Earth."
  2. Remove and hold up piece 1, the 3/4 piece. "Nearly three-quarters of the Earth is covered in water."
  3. Point to the remaining 1/4 of the apple. "The remaining quarter represents the land area."
  4. Remove and hold up piece 2. "This section represents uninhabitable land including deserts, mountains, and polar regions that are not suitable for people to live or grow crops."
  5. Remove and hold up piece 3. "This section represents habitable land. People live on this land, but crops are not grown here as this land includes nature preserves, public lands, and developed areas like roads, schools, houses, ect."
  6. Remove and hold up the remaining piece. "A tiny portion of the Earth's surface has the potential to grow crops. This section represents arable land."
  7. Point to the top layer of dark brown soil. "This small section of topsoil represents all the soil on Earth upon which humans depend for food production."

Some assembly required. The model ships without the handle attached.

Land use apple old model, high quality magnetic pieces, looking forward to using in the fall, practiced with my daughter who thought it was “really cool” and understandable; could not attach handle, will try again during the summer when patience returns…

It is just what we were looking for to use with our Ag in the Classroom activities. And being marked down to $30.00 made it an easy purchase.

    Apple Land Use Model

This model works great for our soils programs. It's large enough for students to see and very easy to work with. We used to cut up a real apple for the demo. This eliminates knives in the classroom and food waste as well. Highly recommend.
